I Hate Your Work

“Artistic merit” is a standard criterion for grant proposals, show reviews, program admissions, and other make-or-break moments for artists. So who decides what has artistic merit and what doesn’t?

Launched in 2016, I Hate Your Work (IHYW) opens an ongoing conversation examining unconscious bias and racism, recognizing that the way work is judged is key to the decision-making process - and to artists’ success. A panel of art makers, administrators, and adjudicators come together to share their experiences confronting and navigating biases throughout the sector.
