Past Artward Bound residency locations:
Earthdance is located in the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains in Plainfield, Massachusetts and has two sunny studio spaces. The "Umbrella" studio is a 1600 square foot space in the round with a sprung maple floor and windows on all sides with a glimpse of an apple orchard and meadow of soft grasses; the "Dance Barn" is a large (24' x 48') studio equipped with a piano, sound equipment, a sprung maple floor, and a wall of windows. The main house is a rustic and renovated farmhouse. The all-vegetarian kitchen is the heart of the house, where a long wooden table attracts dynamic conversation. Bedrooms are shared and there are lots of nooks and crannies, a comfortable living room, and closed in porch for gathering or just cozying up with a good book. There is one computer for checking email, but if you are a writer bring your laptop. Earthdance features an outdoor sauna, a small pond, and a nearby lake for swimming.
White Oak Plantation is located in Yulee, Florida. Made possible by The Howard Gilman Foundation, this residency is for more experienced artists who have presented at least two evening-length productions or the equivalent. Since 1993, The Howard Gilman Foundation has hosted a variety of national and international conferences and seminars at White Oak directly related to its three fields of interest: arts and culture, conservation and the environment, and medical research and care. White Oak is also home to the Mikhail Baryshnikov Dance Studio which houses an active artists' residency program, where noted directors and choreographers have developed and refined their work. The White Oak Conservation Center occupies a portion of the plantation set aside for the care and breeding of 60 species of endangered and threatened animals, mostly from sub-Saharan Africa.
Wild Meadows is located in the western countryside of Pennsylvania in the town of Schellsburg. There is one rehearsal space that has a marley floor (Paul Taylor Company's old touring marley!) and is appropriate for dance. There is ample common space for shared, quiet work such as writing, reading, and daydreaming. Wild Meadows has limited technical resources, and artists needing audio and video equipment for their work should be prepared to bring it, as well as extension cords and adaptors. Wild Meadows is situated in a hilly, agricultural area, and offers the chance to walk in apple orchards and snooze in a hammock. In addition there is a covered porch with a swing, and participants often enjoy sleeping under the stars with their sleeping bags.
The Silo Project is located in Leigh Valley, Pennsylvania. Dancenow/NYC's Silo Project offers use of two renovated, fully-equipped rehearsal studios, as well as homey accommodations in a farm house. Sleeping is in communal rooms or various nooks with futons. Horses and six dogs have run of the property, and there are walking trails and places to swim. Just 76 miles from New York City (and 56 miles from Philadelphia), Silo offers urban artists an inspiring haven in which they can come together to create, process, rehearse, and escape pressures of city life. To date, more than 50 choreographers and their companies have enjoyed residencies at the Silo Project.

"Artward Bound provides an essential resource for the creation of new work: a calm, peaceful setting in which to explore new material, and a structure for feedback along the route of the creative process. It's also important the Artward Bound's admission policy is by lottery, providing opportunities for artists at various stages in their careers to create new work, and to learn from one another." - Cynthia Hopkins, Theater Artist
"The concentrated, generous opportunity that Artward Bound provides is a rare luxury for a developing artist like me: to be trusted and held, to be among 'my own kind', and given space and time set aside for creation." - Robert Yarnall, Theater Artist
"It is an amazingly important thing to be picked up, transported, and deposited into an artistic oasis. Plus I came away with a finished script." - Neal Hemphill, Playwright |
